About

This session aims to answer the question, “What strategies can educators use to support effective UDL implementation among teachers in their community?” Participants will learn about and experience 6 concrete strategies that have been refined through years of supporting UDL implementation and are designed to inspire and sustain changes in teaching. Using a holistic design approach, these 6 practical strategies transform traditional PD by focusing on removing barriers to adult learning, sustaining effort and persistence, and maximizing transfer of professional learning into classroom practice. These strategies help teachers understand what UDL implementation looks like in their context and provide flexible methods for monitoring progress. Participants will gain knowledge and takeaway materials to incorporate these PD strategies into their UDL implementation initiatives.

Creating School Based UDL Implementation Plans

Creating School Based UDL Implementation Plans

This presentation focuses on how a collaboration between the administration and school leadership team (i.e., instructional coaches) and university partners developed a three year plan for rolling out and implementing principles of UDL in schoolwide systems, classroom instructional practices, and assessment and data analysis conducted at all levels of the school.

About
Universal Design for Learning is a conceptual framework that can support the proactive planning of addressing learner variability in the classroom. As classrooms continue to evolve and include students who represent different experience, ability, engagement or interest, and cultural and linguistic diversity, it is important for schools to have an ongoing and systematic plan for addressing the variability of all students. Reflections and lessons learned in the first year of implementation of this plan with content area professional learning communities are shared, with suggestions for handling UDL fail and collecting stakeholder feedback also discussed.

About

The purpose of this resource is to highlight Universal Design for Learning as a framework for designing highly effective professional learning experiences. All learners vary in the way they engage with new information, perceive content, and in the strategies they use to make sense of knowledge. Professional learning opportunities must recognize and address variability in adult learners, just as we recognize it in younger students. While the UDL framework can enhance the design and delivery of professional learning on any topic, it is crucial to apply and model the foundations of UDL when delivering professional learning on UDL.
