Unexpected weeks of distance learning weren’t what many of us were hoping for as we ended our school year this year. And while we had many challenges to overcome, we also had so many opportunities to learn! The UDL framework and distance learning are a fabulous partnership especially in the literature learning environment. Learn about bringing organization, sharing information, reading and writing, and assessment together with UDL to promote expert learning during distance instruction. Weeks of virtual, remote teaching have been an unexpected journey for us all, filled with unique roadblocks and surprises. However, using UDL as the guiding compass in training, preparing, removing barriers, lesson design, and more can help make the journey much more enjoyable. To increase the use of UDL Practices in California, the Inclusion Collaborative, in partnership with local and national partners, developed several online professional development modules to support equitable, inclusive practices for all students within general education. Building from the UDL Guidelines, online professional development sessions were developed and made available to administrators and teachers in partnering districts. This session describes the process for developing these modules to align to quality design principles, adhere to the UDL Guidelines, and provide users with individualized and flexible options for navigating each module. The session also discusses how flexible and ongoing online professional development and credentialing system can support new and veteran educators in sustaining inclusive and equitable practices.

Online learning options provide the opportunity to engage, individualize instruction, and provide greater flexibility in academic offerings and learning environments, in a way that our traditional education system has often been challenged to do. For over two decades, online learning environments have redefined what it means “to go to school"; for hundreds of thousands of K-12 students; and over the past two months, millions of students and teachers have been thrust into teaching and learning online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
