Goals of this CA1 Institute:

• Explain what is meant by the term emergent multilingual and recognize how emergent multilinguals are supported by culturally sustaining teaching
• Examine a Tier 1 framework that supports effective teaching for ALL students in the general education classroom
• Recognize the commonality of effective practices for students with diverse learning needs, including the use of co-teaching
• Recognize the overlap in characteristics of students who are emergent multilinguals and students who may have a disability, and distinguish between academic versus language needs of these students
• Consider best practices in identifying emergent multilinguals who may need additional (Tier 2 & Tier 3) supports
