Centering Your Students: Summer Workshop 2022
This Global Micro-Credential Experience represents the learning acquired by participating in Centering Your Students: How to Sustain Inclusion and Equity as an Educator, a full-day workshop in July 2022, offered by the University of Kansas Area Studies Centers and the School of Education and Human Sciences. Participants learned about the larger conditions that shape student learning and how to remain critical of their personal practices and ideologies that might influence their pedagogy; they were introduced to emerging research and worked with fellow educators to consider how pedagogy and curriculum can adequately address educational inequalities and social justice; and they also practiced strategies for culturally relevant, responsive or sustaining pedagogy.
Earners of this micro-credential attended a six-hour workshop with presentations by the KU area studies centers, including the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS), the Kansas African Studies Center (KASC), and the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREES), and by expert School of Education and Human Sciences faculty, on resources and pedagogy for teaching students of diverse cultural backgrounds and needs. Participants engaged in self-critical writing activities, debated methods of cultivating a sense of belonging in students, discussed methods of making connections with students, and developed plans of action to be used in the coming school year.
