About
This interactive session focuses on how UDL and the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) converge to develop expert learner traits in mathematics. By examining links between the UDL guidelines and effective teaching practices that engage students in the SMPs, participants will be able to reduce barriers to student learning in the classroom. Participants will walk away with research-informed instructional strategies for eliciting student thinking and using it to provide options that deepen learning for all students.

About
How do you make connections to spread the UDL message and support statewide UDL implementation? The Special Education Technology Center in Washington State has created innovative strategies, supports and trainings to connect school districts and educators across our state. Our goal is to empower leaders and educators in the classroom to embrace UDL and step forward from wherever they are onto a path toward inclusion. This session will be interactive with practical examples, tips and tools we have learned on our UDL journey as well as reflection and discussion time to draw on the rich experience of our participants.

Unleash Your Inner Designer

Unleashing Your Inner Designer

In order for educators and educational leaders to fully implement Universal Design for Learning, they must first embrace the identity of a designer.

About
As educators take on the work of Universal Design for Learning, their self-efficacy in that work is paramount to the success of implementation and expert learner outcomes; yet, so frequently the conversations, training, and time to develop this efficacy comes last in the progression of implementation. In order for educators and educational leaders to fully implement Universal Design for Learning, they must first embrace the identity of a designer. Unfortunately, the term design is too often associated with being arty or creative. In our work as educational designers and consultants, we’ve had people say to us, “I’m just not very creative” OR “UDL is easier for creative types, and that’s just not me.” Bryan and Joni's talk centers on self-efficacy and creative confidence as launch pads for UDL implementation.

UDL for the Reluctant Teacher: Making UDL Accessible to ALL Teachers

UDL for the Reluctant Teacher

Watch reluctant teacher-turned #UDLrockstar and 8th grade middle school teacher, Lois Sepahban, and the administrator who introduced her to UDL, Jennifer Pusateri, Universal Design Consultant, as we explore ways to remove barriers to UDL implementation for even your most reluctant teacher.

About
When schools are ready to build teacher support for school-wide implementation of UDL, they often encounter three distinct groups of teachers: 1) those who are excited and ready to embrace UDL, 2) those who have no interest in UDL, and 3) those who like the idea of UDL but feel overwhelmed by the perceived barriers. This breakout session is designed specifically to help participants address the concerns of the last group, the reluctant teachers. In this session participants will identify potential barriers for reluctant teachers, and consider some ways to remove these barriers for the reluctant teachers in their school or district. Join reluctant teacher-turned #UDLrockstar and 8th grade middle school teacher, Lois Sepahban, and the administrator who introduced her to UDL, Jennifer Pusateri, Universal Design Consultant, as we explore ways to remove barriers to UDL implementation for even your most reluctant teacher.

UDL-IFT: A Flexible Tool for Measuring UDL Implementation

The Universal Design for Learning Implementation Fidelity Tool (UFL-IFT; Johnson-Harris, 2014) was designed to measure UDL implementation fidelity. It allows users to determine the extent of UDL implementation on a scale of “not UDL” to “robust UDL”. The tool can be used by teachers to guide or evaluate their own UDL implementation practices or by instructional coaches or peer coaches to facilitate discussions related to UDL implementation.

Key Questions to Consider When Planning Lessons

An alternate way to consider the UDL Guidelines is to look at some key questions that each Guideline answers. When planning a lesson or unit, consider these questions to ensure that the environment is flexible and inclusive of all learners.
