Journey to UDL: Reframing Lesson Design Using the UDL Framework

Analyzing lessons and recognizing barriers, the need for UDL was critical to optimize learning for all students, especially in the mist of the pandemic. Utilizing the UDL framework, lessons were redesigned and became the skeletal frame to guide the learning in the lessons.

About

The CAPMSE design team worked collaboratively to build a K-8 math and science lesson repository. The design team vetted lessons based on the Universal Design for Learning framework. The intention of the repository was to have ready-to-use k-8 math and science lessons that were accessible in a distance learning environment, a digital environment, and/or an in-person classroom setting.

Analyzing lessons and recognizing barriers, the need for UDL was critical to optimize learning for all students, especially in the mist of the pandemic. Utilizing the UDL framework, lessons were redesigned and became the skeletal frame to guide the learning in the lessons.

Bringing Context to the Classroom: Cross-Disciplinary Learning and UDL

Cross-Disciplinary Learning and UDL

This breakout session creates a single cross-disciplinary lesson with a focus on inclusion with the goal of creating a vibrant, engaging lesson that encourages students to see school learning and real-world learning as one in the same.

About
This breakout session creates a single cross-disciplinary lesson with a focus on inclusion. The lesson is designed to integrate all the traditional disciplines (math, English, history, science, art, etc…) by grounding learning in a real-world context. We begin with a discussion of what cross-disciplinary learning looks like in the elementary classroom. Next, brainstorm ideas for the lesson and begin designing it, with careful consideration of the UDL guidelines. By the end of the session, we have a vibrant, engaging lesson that encourages students to see school learning and real-world learning as one in the same.

About

Use this presentation as a tool to aide people in creating universally designed experiences. It goes through the foundations UDL is built upon: student variability, context, clear goals with loose means, and removing instructional barriers. There is a corresponding youtube video that shows an older verison of this presentation. This would be a helpful tool for districts without a UDL facilitator or easy access to training who are looking for ways to get started in their design right away.
