Journey to UDL: Reframing Lesson Design Using the UDL Framework

Analyzing lessons and recognizing barriers, the need for UDL was critical to optimize learning for all students, especially in the mist of the pandemic. Utilizing the UDL framework, lessons were redesigned and became the skeletal frame to guide the learning in the lessons.

About

The CAPMSE design team worked collaboratively to build a K-8 math and science lesson repository. The design team vetted lessons based on the Universal Design for Learning framework. The intention of the repository was to have ready-to-use k-8 math and science lessons that were accessible in a distance learning environment, a digital environment, and/or an in-person classroom setting.

Analyzing lessons and recognizing barriers, the need for UDL was critical to optimize learning for all students, especially in the mist of the pandemic. Utilizing the UDL framework, lessons were redesigned and became the skeletal frame to guide the learning in the lessons.

About

This session will introduce to participants a virtual reality social skills tool for students with social skill deficits.  Available across various platforms (e.g., Chrome, iPad, Oculus), students have the possibility of address social emotional challenges across 10 social skill domains.  Participants will learn about the tool, its alignment to the UDL Framework, and how this can be used by students and their educators to address social skill deficits in a personalized user friendly format. In addition to the virtual reality tool, educators will also learn about a tool that facilitates the practice and generalization of the learning social skill in the “real” classroom.

About

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Certificate is designed to engage professors in self-directed learning, interactive group learning, one-on-one coaching, and peer-to-peer sharing activities, as they work through understanding and applying the UDL framework at progressively deeper levels. The certificate is designed to leverage and connect UDL expertise across the college to support sustainable adoption. We compare this long-term goal to the growth of the ‘rhizome’. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on how aspects of this model could be implemented at their own institutions.

About
This session dives into an impact study Goalbook conducted in conjunction with WestEd and DC Public schools, using a mixed-methods approach to answer the following research questions:
  • What impact does the UDL framework have on teacher classroom practice?
  • How can districts support teachers’ use of UDL in classrooms?
This study examined how the UDL framework is used to design instruction and facilitate differentiated lesson planning through instructional coaching at the K-12 level. The findings support the body of research that suggests the UDL framework aids educators in designing differentiated learning experiences accessible for all learners. Both teachers and instructional coaches cited Goalbook Toolkit as a critical tool in utilizing the UDL framework within their instructional design and coaching. Ongoing evaluations following this initial study reveal promising applications of increased teacher efficacy in understanding and applying UDL principles and strategies to support diverse learner needs.
