This one-hour webinar, held during the 5th Annual CAST UDL Symposium, offers a critique of the traditional perspective of "expert learners" and how UDL supports the development of expert learners. Members of CAST, identify what expert learners are, what they do, and how they are developed within the learning environment but discuss how these ideas and definition can be viewed with a progressive lens.

This article provides insight into how UDL can support teachers who design lessons and learning environments to include students with significant cognitive disabilities. Information on what and how UDL develops expert learners, what educators can do to foster expert learning, and examples of in-class practices that foster expert learning, is presented.

Participants will:

Learn about one of the key UDL Core Foundation - Level 2 credential knowledge statements: "the goal promotes expert learning by encouraging challenging ways of thinking and doing." The UDL Core Foundation knowledge statements were developed as part of the UDL credential initiative by Learning Designed. Together with the UDL Guidelines, these knowledge statements can be used to reflect on how the design of any learning experience anticipates variability and reduces barriers.
